{"id":3948,"date":"2023-10-18T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-18T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cybersecurityclinics.org\/?p=3948"},"modified":"2025-06-06T14:18:49","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T14:18:49","slug":"ten-members-of-consortium-of-cybersecurity-clinics-receive-funding-and-support-from-google-cybersecurity-clinics-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cybersecurityclinics.org\/blog\/ten-members-of-consortium-of-cybersecurity-clinics-receive-funding-and-support-from-google-cybersecurity-clinics-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Release: Ten Consortium Clinics Receive Support from Google.org"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Google.org will provide $500,000 grants, volunteers, and in-kind support to ten university-based cybersecurity clinics across the country<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BERKELEY, CA \u2013 <\/strong>Ten university-based cybersecurity clinics \u2014&nbsp;all members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurityclinics.org\/\">Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics<\/a> \u2014&nbsp;will each receive $500,000 in grant funding and additional support from <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberclinics.withgoogle.com\/\">Google\u2019s Cybersecurity Clinics Fund<\/a>. The funding from Google.org, the company\u2019s philanthropic arm, is part of a $20-million collaboration that Google\u2019s CEO, Sundar Pichai, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/inside-google\/message-ceo\/commitment-cybersecurity-workforce\/\">announced <\/a>in June as part of an initiative to expand the number of cybersecurity clinics across the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University cybersecurity clinics provide free security services in the same way law or medical schools offer free clinics in their communities. They give students the opportunity to learn and improve digital security skills in a real-world context, while helping to protect the digital networks of critical infrastructure, such as hospitals, schools, and energy grids, as well as non-profits and other public interest organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are tremendously grateful for Google\u2019s commitment to strengthen and grow university-based cyber clinics, which bring diverse students into the cybersecurity profession while providing vital security assistance to civic institutions across the country,\u201d said Ann Cleaveland, Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics and Executive Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cltc.berkeley.edu\/about-us\/\">UC Berkeley Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity<\/a>, the Consortium\u2019s administrative home. \u201cCybersecurity clinics deliver hands-on training to students while assisting civic organizations like hospitals, local governments, and non-profits that play a vital role in our society, but don\u2019t always have the resources to defend themselves against ransomware and other cyber threats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cyber attacks increased by <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.checkpoint.com\/2023\/01\/05\/38-increase-in-2022-global-cyberattacks\/\">38% globally in 2022<\/a>, and have cost the U.S. economy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/Media\/PDF\/AnnualReport\/2022_IC3Report.pdf\">billions of dollars<\/a> over the past five years. Despite the need for more cybersecurity professionals, there are currently more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberseek.org\/heatmap.html\">550,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs<\/a> in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConsortium members share a wide range of teaching materials, including digital training modules, so that schools interested in creating a clinic can move quickly to get started,\u201d said Professor Larry Susskind, Co-Chair of the Consortium and Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/urbancyberdefense.mit.edu\/cybersecurityclinic\">MIT Cybersecurity Clinic<\/a>. \u201cThis level of collaboration among members \u2014&nbsp;which now include over two dozen active clinics, clinics in development, and allies \u2014&nbsp;is one of the great strengths of the Consortium.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ten grants from Google.org will support clinics at the University of Alabama; University of Georgia, Athens; Indiana University; Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT); Stillman College; the University of Texas at Austin; the University of Texas at San Antonio; and the University of California at Berkeley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to grant funding, Google is offering the ten clinics volunteer mentorship from Google employees, <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/titan-security-key\">Titan Security Keys<\/a>, and scholarships for the new <a href=\"https:\/\/grow.google\/certificates\/cybersecurity\/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=cyber__geo--US&amp;utm_content=#?modal_active=none\">Google Career Certificate in Cybersecurity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese clinics have been designed to provide the next generation of professionals with the tools and resources they need to succeed in the ever-growing field of cybersecurity,&#8221; said Royal Hansen, Google&#8217;s Vice President of Privacy, Safety, and Security Engineering. \u201cWe&#8217;re proud to lend a hand to help grow a strong security workforce responsible for strengthening and protecting our infrastructure for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google and the Consortium have opened the application for other institutions interested in launching a clinic.
