{"id":22,"date":"2023-04-20T18:39:57","date_gmt":"2023-04-20T18:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cltc-cybersecurity-clinics.test\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2026-05-22T14:03:58","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T14:03:58","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cybersecurityclinics.org\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"History of the Consortium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading h3\">The Consortium<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\"><strong>Founded in May 2021, the Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics serves as a forum for clinicians, trainers, students, and advocates to share knowledge, expand the reach of cybersecurity clinics, and lower the barriers for other institutions to establish their own clinics.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cybersecurity clinic provides cybersecurity services to community organizations, including small businesses, nonprofits, cities and towns, rural school districts, small utilities and more, while giving students real-world cybersecurity experience. Modeled after legal and medical school clinics, cybersecurity clinics are typically housed at colleges and universities under the direction of clinical professors. Students from diverse backgrounds and degree paths train to provide free cybersecurity assistance to clients who could not otherwise afford these services. Clinics serve as a skills-based learning environment for students and as a vital local resource for improving the cybersecurity resilience of communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more, check out our &#8220;What is a cybersecurity clinic?&#8221; video below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"What is a Cybersecurity Clinic?\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mYCka8oF7rQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading h3\">Breaking Ground<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the official launch of the Consortium, several member universities already had the basis for a clinic program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of California, Berkeley\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cltc.berkeley.edu\/program\/cybersecurity-clinic\/\">Cybersecurity Clinic<\/a> launched in 2018 with a focus on defending nonprofits at risk of politically motivated cyber attack.&nbsp; In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberrisk.iu.edu\/career-prep\/cyberclinic.html\">Indiana University launched a clinic<\/a> to address the needs of state and local agencies, and <a href=\"http:\/\/urbancyberdefense.mit.edu\/cybersecurityclinic\">MIT launched a clinic<\/a> focused on supporting small towns and municipalities in New England, inspired in part by national news of municipalities facing devastating ransomware attacks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, UC Berkeley teamed up with MIT, Indiana University, and the University of Alabama to assess interest in a forum for cybersecurity clinic leaders and coordinators to share knowledge. They were quickly joined by the University of Georgia, Athens, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and allied organizations R Street Institute and the Global Cyber Alliance, and the idea for the Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, we\u2019ve joined forces with university-based cybersecurity clinics operating around the nation, and the cybersecurity clinic model has steadily taken hold at colleges and universities in the United States and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading h3\">A Diverse Workforce<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Consortium\u2019s ambition is to dramatically grow the number of universities and students engaged in clinics, with attention to increasing the representation of women and minorities that have traditionally been under-represented in the cybersecurity field. The Consortium works to incubate new cybersecurity clinics through mentorship and direct funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-770 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/live-cltc-cybersecurity-clinics.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/kevin-harris-headshot-300x300.png\" alt=\"Professor Kevin Harris\" width=\"190\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cybersecurityclinics.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/kevin-harris-headshot-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/cybersecurityclinics.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/kevin-harris-headshot-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/cybersecurityclinics.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/kevin-harris-headshot.png 522w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cStillman College is the first Historically Black College or University to adopt the clinic model\u2026Stillman\u2019s cybersecurity clinic is focused on building a diverse pipeline into the workforce, as well as supporting underserved small- to mid-sized minority owned organizations.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Former Program Chair, Computational and Information Sciences, Stillman College<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p><br>Member clinics attract a diverse, multidisciplinary pool of talent into the digital technology field. Cybersecurity clinics enroll students from a range of degree programs, including urban planning, computer science, journalism, political science, law, and business.
